The water hyacinth has the scientific name of “Eichhornia crassipes”. It belongs to the Pontederiaceae family, that is to say a plant that floats on the surface of the water or in the mud. Green in color, the hyacinth is a flowering plant whose petals can be purple or light blue and the stem can reach 10 cm in height (see photo n°1 below).Photo 1: The hyacinth plant gradually taking over at the level of dam no. 2 in Ouaga
Photo above shows the hyacinth which is a floating macrophyte
aquatic plant, growing on the surface or in uk teleghttps://dbtodata.com/uk-telegramram data the mud of waterways. Its presence in infested regions of tropical and subtropical countries has caused serious economic and ecological consequences (Ghabbour et al., 2004; Center et al., 2005). The plant, thanks to the height and high density it can reach, reduces light and oxygen underwater. This asphyxiation of underwater life affects the balance of the aquatic ecosystem.
2.2. Three consequences caused by the Hyacinth plant
Access to fishing sites has become difficult due to the strong presence of hyacinth mats.
The first consequence of this plant in an environment is on human health, with the nests which are conducive to the development of a certain number of disease vectors, hot sale day: learn the experts’ strategies and get ready to sellmosquitoes proliferate a certain number of insects and also slow down river transport; the second type of consequence is the impoverishment of the ecosystem and finally, the line data third and last type of consequences is of an economic nature. When the ecosystem is disrupted in this way, it goes without saying that all the activities linked to this ecosystem will be blocked.
Four proposed methods of struggle
We have chosen to apply a certain number of methods in view of their effectiveness in the said fight against the phenomenon of hyacinth in place of other methods that we have overlooked. There is the chemical method which consists of injecting chemicals into the body of water,
but in view of the environmental risks that this entails we have not yet tested it. There is also the biological method which consists of
introducing other plant species into the environment which can contain its proliferation
or insects or mammals. These are biological methods which require a lot of technicality, but also a method which takes too much time. There is also the mechanical method,
which is carried out with mechanized means, which are very expensive and the physical method.
2.4. The physical method, the choice made in Burkina Faso
In Burkina Faso, as in several countries sharing the same concerns
about climate change resulting in climate disruption on the planet, it is the physical method which is preferred and
practiced in Burkina Faso, see photo n°3 below, at dam n°2 in Ouagadougou.
